Tunisian Waffle Head Towel

This week is the final week of the Spa Gift Basket Series, and you can find all the previous patterns here (Tunisian RIB wash cloth, Spring Tunisian Basket, Honeycomb Wash Mitten, Tunisian Wash Cloth and Shower Puff).   This week I want to share with you my favourite of all the Spa patterns, my Tunisian Waffle Head Towel.   I have always liked using a head towel after a shower and the one I had been using was looking a bit worse for wear and needed replacing.  I’m not sure exactly why I suddenly thought of making one rather than buying a new one, but something gave me the idea, and being as I had a large stash of James C Brett Glisten Cotton already at home I decided to use it to create a head towel.   At the time I was making it, I was really trying to work with Tunisian Crochet more and so I decided to create this head towel using Tunisian Crochet.

This head towel is actually a series of firsts for me.   Not only is it my first head towel pattern, but it’s also my first time using Tunisian Waffle Stitch, its also my first time really experimenting with increases and decreases, and definitely my first time writing a Tunisian Crochet pattern that’s more than just a square shape.   I don’t know why I didn’t explore increases and decreases with Tunisian Crochet sooner, it was definitely not as scary as I thought it would be, and once I got the hang of it, getting the shape I wanted wasn’t really that difficult at all.   I absolutely love how this turned out, and I have been using it for a few weeks and I love it.   Its just as good as any shop bought head towel, it absorbs excess moisture from my hair after my shower, it washes up just as well on a cool temperature and the drying time is also pretty similar to that of a shop bought towel (when air dried).   It sits on my head great too.

The sizing for this head towel is really designed for an adult with medium to long hair.   It has some spare space on my head, (which is quite small) so would accommodate a larger head too.  If you want to make it slightly smaller or bigger though it’s easily adjustable by increasing or decreasing the hook size by one.   You can see in some of the pictures Oliver wanted to try it on too, and although its too big for him it doesn’t look too bad either!   You can get the pattern for the Tunisian Waffle Head Towel below.

Join me next week for a new series of patterns divided across 4 weeks, a series of hair bows, motif’s to decorate them and a lovely storage pouch to put them all in.

  1. Notes

Here are a few handy tips to help you with the pattern.

  • The gauge for this head towel is 20 stitches and 14 rows in a 10 cm square in waffle stitch.
  • The waffle pattern appears on the reverse of the fabric. As it is put together the reverse side will become the front.
  • The finished head towel measures 70cm long and 48cm wide (at its widest point)
