Naomi the Narwhal Crochet Pattern

  1. Materials and Resources

Below is a list of everything you will need to make Naomi

  • Paintbox Simply Aran Yarn (although any aran/worsted weight will work) – 100g balls in the following colours
    • Midnight Blue (237)
    • Seafoam Blue (231)
    • Champagne White (202)
  • 2 x 10mm black safety eyes (or you can sew them on in black)
  • Stuffing
  • Pipe cleaner
  • 3 mm hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker

Below is a list of all the stitches (and their abbreviations) featured in this series of patterns.  All terms used are American.

  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Sc inc – single crochet increase
  • Sc dec – single crochet decrease – I use the invisible decrease method
  • Ch – chain
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Trc – treble crochet
  • Romanian point lace cord
  1. Notes

Here are a few handy tips to help you with the pattern.

  • There is no specific gauge for Naomi, however the tighter you crochet the fewer gaps will be available when stuffing. My finished Naomi is 9” long (including tusk) and 5” wide (including flippers)
  • To make the colour change look better without carrying yarn through stitches the body of Naomi is made in rows turning as you go, this will leave an opening which will be closed when the tummy section is finished.
  • When changing colour, change on the final yarn over of the previous stitch.
  • All these patterns are worked in continuous rounds, do not sl st at the end of each round. A stitch marker is essential for keeping track of the start of your rows.

 Tusk – In White

1 make Romanian Point Lace Cord 2.5” long and sc all 3 points together and cast off

Sew finishing thread through the cord and tie in a knot.

Then insert a pipecleaer folded in half into the tusk to give it some support

 

Body – in Midnight Blue

Tail – Make 1 in Seafoam and 1 in Midnight

1 Ch 10, skip first chain by hook, then continuing down the chain, sc, hdc, 2 dc in same ch, hdc, sc, hdc, 2 dc in same ch, hdc, then 5 sc in end chain 15
Working up the other side, hdc, 2 dc in same chain, hdc, sc, hdc, 2 dc in same ch, hdc, 4 sc, sl st and cast off 28 total
2 Holding two pieces together and using M, insert hook where the sl st is and work as follows, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc x 4, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc x 4 , sl st ,cast off 28
Sew in ends and sew to end of narwhal tail

 

Flippers – Make 2 in Seafoam and 2 in Midnight

1 Ch 5, skip first ch, and 3 sc down ch and 3 sc in end ch, then working up the other side, 3 sc and sc in skipped stitch, sl st and cast off 10
2 Match 2 flippers and sc together in midnight around the outside, sl st, cast off 10
Sew flippers across rows 10 to 13 2 stitches from the edge of the M section
