Below is a list of everything you will need to make this hat

  • Paintbox Simply Aran – 100g balls in any colours you choose – I used the following colours;
    • Rose Red (213)
    • Lime Green (228)
    • Grass Green (229)
    • Paper White (200)
    • Small amount of black for mouth
  • 2 x 10mm safety eyes
  • stuffing
  • 4mm hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker

  • Sc – single crochet
  • Ch – chain
  • Sc inc – sc increase
  • Sc dec – sc decrease (invisible kind)
  • m/c – magic circle
  • sl st – slip stitch

  • Gauge – no specific gauge required but you need to work as tightly as possible to avoid stuffing showing through.

Watermelon – in Grass Green

Row Instruction Stitches
1 Ch 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end, ch 1 turn 20
2 Change to Lime Green sc in each stitch to end, ch 1 turn 20
3 Sc in each stitch to end, ch 1 turn 20
4 Change to Grass Green sc in each stitch to end, ch1 turn 20
5 Sc in each stitch to end, ch 1 (do not turn) 20
6 Sc around the edge of the watermelon skin start by going along the short edge, then the long edge where your ch was, then the final short edge.   Work a ch 1 between the sc in each corner.   Cast off before you do the final long side 30 (+20 on the side you didn’t sc around)
Change to white
7 Sc around the outside of the watermelon skin (all 4 sides) and put a sc in each of the ch 1 corners you made and add an additional 2 sc in the final corner you didn’t make in round 6 55
Change to red
8-9 sc around 55
10 (3 sc, sc dec) x 11 44
11 Sc around 44
12 (2 sc, sc dec) x 11 33
13 Sc around 33
14 (sc, sc dec) x 11 22
15 Sc around 22
16 (Sc dec) x 10 sc, 2 sc 12
Add eyes between rows 9 and 10, 4 stitches apart


17 (sc, dec) x 6 6
Sl st, cast off and sew shut
  • Sew a mouth centrally under the eyes in black.
  • Sew black seeds evenly around the watermelon slice
