Crochet Drawstring Backpack & Pouch

Crochet Drawstring Backpack & Pouch

26th December 2018 0 By cosycrochet

I hope everyone has had a really lovely Christmas and enjoyed spending it with family and friends whether you celebrate it or not.  My Kids have had the best time and for them the excitement is not over yet as they still have all their new presents to explore and enjoy.   This week I want to share with you a pattern I actually worked up quite a few months ago, way back in September, but I didn’t actually get around to writing it up until more recently, the crocheted Drawstring Backpack & Pouch.  (Although the pouch is a bit of a late addition!)

I originally made this bag in the really chunky yarn that Aldi releases a couple of times a year, in the mustard and cream colours.   Its a fairly simple design, and starts with a large circle which is worked in the round and built up until the right size.   It has eyelets around the top of the bag to thread the drawstring though and a circle flap to close over the top of the drawstring.   There is also a small front pocket and then straps on the back to carry it on your pack.   Apart from the drawstring it uses two magnetic bag clasps to close it.   I chose to fully line this bag, but if you made it from Cotton, you could probably get away without doing so as it would probably hold up quite nicely.

I chose to make this bag using a knit effect which I really love, especially when combined with a slight pattern where the colours are switched over from main to contrasting.   The contrasting colour is not only used as a boarder, but also for the pocket, strap and flap details.   I have been using this particular bag for a while and its nice and roomy and perfect for a family day out.   It can carry all the essentials, plus drinks and snacks for the kids and is really comfy to carry even for a whole day.

More recently I decided to work through this pattern again and I decided to make a smaller bag using 2 strands of the Aldi fancy yarn (the sparkly one) to create an

aran/worsted weight yarn.  The pattern varied slightly from the original, in that I never I actually wrote the original down and I added a few changes, but it comes up smaller and is therefore better for an everyday use bag where I don’t have to carry loads of stuff with me.   Whilst creating the pattern and working on the second bag, I also decided to make a matching pouch for all those little bits we ladies carry in our bag that we don’t want to get lost!   The pouch echoes the patterns created in the main bag, making this the perfect matching set.

If you want to create your own Drawstring Backpack and Pouch then you can find the patterns for them for FREE for there here.   This pattern is for the aran sized bag, however, you can easily use the same pattern and just up the hook and yarn size.   (You may need to adjust the amount of yarn required too, as well as material if you decide to line the bag!)

As it’s still the Christmas Holidays and everyone is probably still celebrating, I’ll keep this post brief, but I do look forward to seeing you all in the new year as I finish my second year blogging and designing at Cosy Crochet and welcome in my third year here!

See you next week,
