Oliver’s Dinosaur Hat – Crochet Pattern

Below is a list of everything you will need to make this hat

  • Hayfield Bonus Chunky – 100g balls in any colours you choose – I used the following colours;
    • Teal (740)
    • Aquamarine (687)
  • 6mm hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

  • Sc – single crochet
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Ch – chain
  • Sc inc – sc increase
  • Fphdc – front post half double crochet
  • Bphdc – back post half double crochet
  • m/c – magic circle
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sk – skip

Here are a few handy tips to help you with the pattern.

  • Gauge – 12 sc and 13 rows in 4” (10cm) square
  • The dinosaur is worked in one piece starting from the centre of the body and worked outward to create the limbs, tail and head.
  • You can use other chunky wool to make the hat, however, having used a different brand the hat came out smaller. To keep it the right size you may need to adjust your hook to keep gauge.
  • This hat comes in the following sizes, baby (14” round) toddler (16” round), child (18” round) and teen (20” round).
  • These hats are worked in the round, do not slip stitch between rounds. A stitch marker will help you keep track of your rows.

5 To form head and neck –

a)    Ch 6, sl st in 3rd ch from hook to create a ring* on top of a ch 3

b)    4 sc in the ring you just created, turn work

c)     Sc, sc inc, sc inc, sc, turn

d)    Sc, sc, sc inc, sc inc, sc, sc, then sc inc into the starting ring marked *, sl st into the top of the ch 3, turn

e)    10 sl st, sc inc in to ring marked * (on the opposite side to last step (d), dc into the sl st from (d), then dc in next 2 ch.   You should now be back to the body of the dino

f)      Sk 2 stitches on the dino body and sc to secure head and neck

g)    2 sc along body side then work on first leg

To form first leg

h)    Ch 5

i)       Sk first ch then hdc in each ch working back towards the body (you should have 4 hdc in total)

j)       Sk a sc on the body then sc to secure leg

k)     3 sc along body then work on second leg

To form second leg

l)       Ch 5

m) Sk first ch then hdc in each ch working back towards the body (you should have 4 hdc in total)

n)    Sk a sc on the body then sc to secure leg

o)    Put one sc in body then work on tail

To form tail

p)    Ch 9

q)    Sk first ch and work 1 stitch in each ch as follows; sl st, sc, sc, hdc, hdc, dc, dc, dc

r)      Sk 2 stitches on the body and sc to secure tail

s)     Sl st in next stitch and cast off leaving a long tail for sewing

Sew an eye and mouth on the dinosaur in main colour and sew to hat
